What's up guys? I have a 1995 f250 with the 460 and just spent $350.00 on a flowmaster and dual lines with stainless 3 inch tips out to the sides behind the rear tires. Well I hate to say it but I am disappointed. It is just plain quiet. I put a flowmaster 40 series right behind the convertor. I know what the 302 and 351's sound like and they sound good with this setup. Mine sounds more like hissing at higher Rpm's than anything. My question is who has a 460 and what sounds good and is loud? My next step is a convertorectomy.(gutting) Help guys? I have done quite a few searches and just want some fresh advice. Thanks, Frank
I recently installed an el-cheapo ($150) 3" mandrel-bent aluminized cat-back system that I bought from JC Whitney. It's a single-in/single-out setup with a straight-through muffler. Sounds nice to me... not too loud, but you know it's not stock. Before bolting up this cat-back system, I fired the truck with only the cat & intermediate pipe. It was really loud with a nice deep sound. Not something the neighbors would appreciate though... and mine live over 1/4 mile away.
Thanks I appreciate the info. Mine sounds OK and I know its not stock but I still feel as though it should be much louder than it is. I think I am going to def. gut the convertor and go from there. If it is too loud guess I will get a highflow cat. Anybody else have similiar setups???? thanks, Frank
Well, if you like the glasspack sound ...... My lift and Warn bumper are off an '88 F-350 4x4 with a 460FI , C-6 auto, 4" lift, & 36" Swampers. That truck was a offroad shop's truck. When it was still running the guy pulled my bro's CJ-7 out of door high mud like nothing. The truck had Hedman headers, no cats, glasspacks and 3" side exiting exhaust. That ***** sounded BADDDDDD!!!! It had a deep throaty scream when he floored it in the soupy-mud and then threw mud clots off the Swampers at least 20 feet in the air!! That's when I decided I must build one.
Sorry to ramble on, just thinking of that still gets me amped up! But long tubes, glasspacks, and 3" pipes are a winner for the 460 if throaty noise is your goal.

I hear what you are saying, LOL. I def. want a deep mean sound now I have kinda like a hissing sound with the flowmaster touch. Just not loud enough for me. It is going on the lift tonight so we will see what happens. I just wanted to know who has one with the huge bullet convertor on it gutted and what it sounds like, come on, I know someone has this setup. Thanks, Frank
Hey, Frank...this is JUST my opinion based on personal observation, but you're not gonna get a wicked, loud sound out of a stock engine, no matter the displacement. I realize it's comparing apples and oranges, but I have a 460 in my Gran Torino originally out of a '74 F-250, and it sounds bad...now! When the engine was still stock, I had plain ol' glasspacks...sounded just like it did with the original 400. I upgraded to a pair of 50-series Flows, and the sound got a LITTLE better, but the difference was hardly noticeable. It was only after I rebuilt the engine (big cam, high-compression pistons, long-tube headers) that the car sounded nasty. Last year I took the three-chambers off and put a pair of 40-series on the car...sounds even nastier now!
My brother has a '79 F-150 with a 460, single exhaust, no cats, plain Walker turbo muffler...he complains about a hissing noise too. Unfortunately, his truck is not high on his priority list (he has a '79 Fairmont he sinks all his money into ), so he lives with the hiss. Gutting your cat MIGHT make your big block rumble a little more, but could possibly hurt performance...all that exhaust gas under pressure tends to tumble around in a gutted converter. Depending on how deep your wallet is, I think you'd see some sound gain (and maybe even some performance) by deleting your cat completely, upgrading to long-tube headers and a 2½" dual-inlet/dual-outlet Flowmaster.
thanks Pat, I appeciate it. I wish I could eliminate my cat all together but VA emissions laws won't let that happen. I am just looking for that nice V8 sounds of half the fuel injected V8 trucks out there. I see after searching through alot of posts that some people have true duals and have gotten rid of there convertors. I would love to see what one of them sounded like. We will just have to wait and see. Thanks guys for all the info.!! Frank
My 89 460 is running fact. exh. manifolds to the factory cat (minus the internals) into single 3 inch pipe to a Bus muffler,(as in school bus), straight through more or less with single 3 inch turned out the side in front of tires. I think it sounds mean as hell. Sounded weird until it burned the muffler a little but it was worth it. It's like 80 bucks at NAPA. 3 in 3 out. Plus it looks like a big resrictive muffler for the cops...but it's not.
Thanks Docamel, I do appreciate it. I am def. lookin for a mean sound. I swear I think the cat is at least half stopped up. I should be able to get it off tomorrow and find out. I will let all of you know how it turns out. Frank
