I have been using a 3/8" drive ratchet made in Taiwan. It was bought in KeyMart and had "Popular mechanics" on it. The socket set it came with claimed to be Cr-V.
In any case, even though it still works fine, I think it is getting closer to slipping. I have another Taiwan ratchet but it doesn't have a swivel like this one does, it is an interesting feature.
I know I don't want one of these new Craftsman ratchets with plastic parts in them, nor do I want something really expensive.
Sam's Club (online) has a mechanics tool set with three ratchets 1/4, 3/8 and 1/2 along with a basic selection of deep and shallow sockets, Its made by channel lock. I guess comes from Twain also but the quality was decent and the set was only 59.00. You could try ebay Ive found lots of snap-on and mac tools there. You just have to catch the auction as it's ending for a good deal.
my ratchets are stanley and its the best quailty ive ever seen im not to big on getting one specific brand i try something if it doeseant work i try something else. stanley makes nice tools and just unbeatable quailty.
Where do you get old stanley, before they exported to Taiwan?
Stanley is the Walmart brand. I actually got their open end wrenches, both metric and SAE, for something like 13.99 but they weren't forged or heat treated, probably cast. though in all honesty, I haven't had problems with them.
Out of all my ratchets, my favs are my 1/2" mac with the ergo grip, my 3/8 flex head mac, my 3/8 Facom fine tooth. The flex head mac gets more use than most, but the feel of the Facom, and it's short throw is hard to beat!
I have a ton of rachets i've collected over the years craftsman, stanley, mac, blackhawk, snap-on and who knows what else, and the one i always go back to is my snap-on. These rachets never broke my knuckles unlike some others that I own. It's got a smaller head and they are easy to service yourself. I just clean them every so often and a drop of oil and they are as good as new. I have had most of my snap-ons for over 18 years.
Being a Canadian Eh? we have good old Crappy tire products too. The newer Canadian Tire products are really quite acceptable. They came out with a Professional series, and have now converted that to a Maximum series. In the past I swore by my Mac, Proto and Snap On ratchets, but these new Canadian Tire products are excellent. They make just about anything that Snap On does anymore in the wrench and ratchet/socket area, and the price is at about 25%. They now have ratchets that offset, and low profile where the socket sits inside the ratchet so it is only about an inch thick. Some real fine stuff in the last five years or so. I always loved US made products and the lifetime warrantee never seemed to be needed as nothing broke, but this now seems the case with the Canadian Tire tools. I do not work for Canadian Tire and I do not play a Tire on TV. (the standard disclaimer) I am also not encouraging anyone else to purchase any products of any kind in any intentional manner.
Bronc, I was prolly writing my own. <chuckle> Actually, the disclaimer is so I don't get in doo-doo for advertising a company that does not sponsor the web site we are on here. I don't know how strictly this policy is enforced, as I was out of country for a while since becoming a member in 2002. So, I had not read enough on the forum to know how bad I was allowed to be. Ha! But this is getting a bit of the topic of ratchets, isn't it??

Yeah thom a bit off topic but all in good fun. I am going to get a set of the geared end wrenches, I used a set and it worked well.
