I'm looking at a 01 f350 4x4. Here's the deal. The dealer who's selling it is selling it as inspectability only. He only promises that it will take a sticker. It's only got 43k on it. It's got the 7.3 with the 6 speed. It's a regular cab with buckets and console. It's an XLT and has everything but leather. It's a dually with no bed. It has the regular grey steel wheels. I'll have to put a bed on it and take the duals off because I don't need them. It's a bank repo but he ussually sells repos cheap. All 4 rear wheels are bald. He'll replace them but I am wondering if they are bald because they have 43k on them or if the guy beat the snot out of it when he realized it was getting repoed. Kelley Blue Book says it's worth $27,540 and NADA says $25,525. That's of course figuring that it's in perfect shape. What do you guys feel this things worth? They don't have a price on it yet and won't until the bank paperwork goes through on April 6. I know the guy and he'll probably hold it if I want it. I haven't run it yet (they were closed when I went through last night) but the interior is mint. I am unsure what the guy used it for but it looks good. I will be able to test drive it. I really hate to pay more that $20,000 for it especially if there's no warranty.
I'd guess the truck has been abused. If the 100K mile engine warranty is void, I'd definitely walk away- that means Ford knows there has been some abuse/damage. Go through KBB & NADA again and change to "trade-in value" to get a more realistic price considering the circumstances of the sale.
Because he's a dealer i beleive he has to give some kind of warranty even if it's only for a month and a 1000 miles. For that kind of money and what you have to put in it I would find something thats already complete and what you really want. This just sounds fishy to me. $20000 for the truck plus what you need to do to it. Ehhh i'd walk. You can find an F350 complete maybe with a little more mileage and a little more money and less headache.
He is putting a warranty on it...saying it will pass inspection. That is it. The 100k powertrain warranty is still in effect. I am not sure what he is asking for it at this time.
Midway Sterling in Kansas City has a 02 F350, 5.4, 165"WB, dually,2wd, manual, cab & chasis for $15,950 in American Trucker magazine. I know it's not the same but it makes the 20K amount sound 2K to 3K high.
BTW I have not had any of our 6 company 350's get over 45,000 mile out of the factory rubber.
I would also be lerey of this truck. I don't know how you fill about headaches, but this could be another one. I would possible look around, but it depends on what you want in a truck and if the wallet can stand a higher price or maybe not.
I would walk away and find a truck configured the way your want. Buying one and then making major changes can nickle and dime you to death. This one sounds like it has other issues anyway. There are tons of used trucks out there just keep looking.

Maybe some of the diesel guys can confirm this, but I don't believe you get a 100,000 mile powertrain warranty. I think only the engine is covered for that duration. The rest of the drivetrain (tranny, axles, transfer case, etc.) is covered under the 36,000 mile warranty.
Get the VIN and go see another dealer or service manager they should be able to look in the ford comp system and see what all that has done to it and if there is any NOTES about being out of the powertrain warranty It should have the 100,000 mile on the motor. As for the tires who knows, did the dealer say what kind of bed it had on it. That might be some thing to think about. What if he used to haul a 20,000 gooseneck all day... Just my .02

You can purchase an extended warranty, and my understanding only the internal engine is covered in the normal 100k.
