New guy with standard trans trouble
I'm new to this site, and have a '98 F-150 4x2 with 4.2L and 5-speed transmission. My problem is this:
My transmission seems to hang in 1st or 2nd, and shifter feels loose and won't change gears. I removed the shifter assembly and realigned the shifting levers inside the transmission case, but it still happens almost every time i attempt to go to 3rd. My truck is stranded in a fire lane, and the growing stack of parking tickets will result in a tow very soon i'm sure. Can anyone help me??

Did you get your truck moved yet?
When you try to move the shifter to 3rd does it feel like it goes in ok?
I'm wondering if the 3/4 shift fork is worn out and not actually moving the synchro sleeve. Or possibly the shift fork roll pin is broken.
Either way i think the transmission is going to have to come out to be fixed.
