I own an 04 250 Lariat CC PSD. It has been running great with no problems averaging about 16-17 mpg with an around town/highway driving combined.
Yesterday I drove to a friends house about 35 miles away. I have had the truck for 3 weeks and it just turned over 2000 miles. I was there about 7 hours and headed home.
I immediately noticed a higher pitched turbo whine at all RPM'S. It made this noise the entire way home regardless of my speed. I of course starting thinking the worst after reading this forum the past few months and figured I would be headed into the dealership today.
I started it up this morning and drove to work (20 miles) and it wasn't making the noise anymore. I drove to lunch and still didn't hear any noise.
There was no change in temp or the way I drove it. It has not been flashed.
I have heard a lot a varying pitches to the turbo all the time. Keep in mind that it is variable vane which changes with barometric pressure and a whole bunch of other parameters. It will change with the weather. I wouldn't worry about it unless you get some other symptoms like noticeable loss of power, noticeable oil residue around the turbo that might indicate turbo bearing problems. I know there have been a few problems but really a few. These turbos have been around a long time and they are pretty solid. I have an 03 engine and I know it is a Garrett who has been making turbos for aircraft, diesels, etc.
