this is what happens when you don't sleep well at night. a v-10 swap into a 77 highboy. ok for real now do any of you folks know if it is possible or practical to put in a 5 or 6 speed tranny (manual)in to a 77 hiboy mine seems like it is geared to low for cruising down the hiway so i was thinking that a 5-6 would be nice then i have the gears to pull my horse trailer with andgo down the highway at a good gas sipping rpm. and you can laugh if need be.
just so you know, the mod motors are huge. also, in typical Ford fashion, not a single thing interchanges with them. You should get a wrecked truck for parts. thats the easiest way to go.
It has been done, so its possible.
good luck, we'll try to help. Welcome to FTE
MT Ford, stop by the high plains chapter, we have a couple guys from that area.
hey cool thanks matts; mabe you can help me a little more i can't remember the formula for figureing out what gears i have in the rear ends and or what tire size i could change to for better mpg at 3150 i am doing 70mph (4speed manual and a 400m)and 285/75/16=32.8 i would like to bring the rpms down to around 2200-2500 so i won't go broke when i drive the thing. any help will be much appetated (sp).
On the line of crazy Ideas.... I have long been pondering the Idea of an inline 6 cylinder Detroit Diesel with a two speed rear end in an 78 extended cab F250... Screamin' two stroke diesel with chrome stacks.. would be lot of fab, but man would that turn some tires!! Was thinking about a 1 piece tilt front end.. ahh, the dreams.. maybe after college!
doable i know a guy i worked with he put a 318 detriot in a 1 ton some thing or another. that is the smallest truck motor that i now of for big trucks that is.i don't know if you can even find parts for them any more.
for the tag and there isn't one.i also checked for an axle number stamp and couldn't find it either. do you know what position the code is in assuming that the body and the axles are all original.any more ideas will be helpfull
frdhighboy...with the numbers you gave, i got some wierd gear ration around a 4.40-ish...but on the chart i have at hand, there is no such gear listed...it goes from a 4.27 gear to a 4.56 gear....where are your rpms at 65 mph? the chart is based off of that speed... rpm = mph x gear ratio x 336/tire height in inches .... in other words...for yours.... 3150=70 x X x 336/32.8 ....gave me X = 4.39 ...but on the chart, it only has 4.27 and 4.56 listed....
now, with a theoretical 3000 rpms at 65 mph and 33" tires, it gives me 4.53 gearing...
you have the formula, the chart can be found at superlift.com, under their article "Gearing Up for Taller Tires"
