It all depends on what kind of terrain you're driving in. For mudding, I usually keep it in D with OD off to keep the wheels spinning. For rock crawling, put in a lower gear. Here in IL, we only have mud though.
Ya, I was muddin, but as I would go through some mud and then up a hill and it seemed to bogge down. It might have something to do with the stock gears though
If you have larger tires, you'll need to replace the factory gears in order to eliminate the bogg. Guys on this site usually prefere the 4.10a for 33's and 35's.
Well, if your doing really sloppy mud, then it would'nt matter if you have 4:10s in the rear, w/ 3:55s in the front. I wonder what the truck would do in the mud like that.
yeah if you were in real sloppy mud you could do that but why put all that strain on the trans fer case chain? i dont feel any bronco deserves that kind of treatment. change them both or live with it the way it is.
Gear ratio must be the same when in 4x4 in both front & rear. 4.10 in rear and the stock 3.54 in front will NOT work. Been there done that. Will not drive properly. I've tryed. Even though the stock ratio is 3.54 in front and 3.55 in the rear. 1 or 2 points difference is okay, but 50 point difference is like trying to put a really big square peg into an ant size round hole.
Although, if you don't plan on 4 wheeling for awhile, then yes, temporarily until you consider sticking your rig into 4x4. I have just changed my rear gears to 4.56, and my front is still 4.10. Either this coming weekend or next I will be changing the front gears to 4.56 to match the rear.
As far as what tranny gear to be in, it just depends on the situation and what type of terrain you are traversing on.
I was just throwing another log in the fire.
But I do know that the 4wheel unlimited class at the muddrags run different gears in the fron and back, I guess maybe too get the front too spin faster than the rear and it pulls more than pushes.
Does that make any sence?
I don't think I have heard of that. I must be But if it works who am I to say. All I know is that I have tryed to engage 4wheel drive once with 4.10s in rear and stock 3.54 in front, and my rig just wanted to puke , And when I did finally change to 4.10 in front to match rear, every thing was all good.
