Ok so My wipers were working great and then we drove into the last blizzard so far this year... the wind was whipping them hard and then there was the big snap you see and they stopped working... OH GOOD! HURRAY! well on a good note the wiper motors are fine. They work great... the wipers still function fully (with the help of some open windows and string) but somewhere between the wiper arms and the wiper motors something snapped... I can't figure out how to access it so I can fix it... or at least figure out what parts to buy. Some help in how to access this problem?
Second. My mileage is dropping below the 10 mpg marker and power is falling off rapidly... I'm assuming it's a clogged fuel filter... or at least that that's the main culprit... How expensive is a new filter and how hard is a do it yourself change?
Wipers: Early models could be accessed from the engine compartment only. Later models, you have to remove the black cowl cover between the wiper arms and the hood. It is held in place by 10-12 rectangular headed nylon rivets you have to drill out to remove and access the wiper motor. If neither wiper moves, then the drive arm from the motor to link has slipped off or broke. Finding replacement rivets is difficult but if you do a search, there is a link on this forum for those replacements. Regular ones are too short to reach or ones long enough have a head too large to fit the small rectangular recess.
Poor mileage: Doubt if it is the fuel filter. More likely the O2 sensor is bad or the fuel pressure regulator has gone south. Pull the vacuum line on the FP regulator and look for evidence of raw fuel in the line. If so, the FP regulator is the culprit as it is allowing fuel to be sucked down the manifold through the vacuum line.
Screw the rivets, I use spring clip nuts and black washered screws. They look nice and original.
I agree with Aero, ether one of those (o2/FPR) maybe the cause.
Well how do I check that?
Note: No check engine light is on... though it only ever comes on during the indicator light test when your turn her on. Shouldn't it come on if the O2 were going?
