About Three months ago I acquired 1982 Ford F-150- 4x4, with a 4 speed, and 300 six. I owned alot of old used cars but this truck is gold. It's a bit rusted, and a bit saggy but it has SPIRIT. During the cold winter months it always started. But I have some questions.
1.The throw-out bearing makes noise when engaged, it there some secret way to lube it without dropping the tranny?
2.When driving it seems that I have to hang third gear because the truck gets sluggish in fourth, I that just a old truck thing?
3.The 300 six starts runs and idles smooth, the brake vacuum booster leaks and I'm replacing that this weekend, could the sluggishness be cause by the vacuum leak?
1. There is no way to grease that bearing - it's sealed
2. That's the nature of that tranny and axle setup. I would guess a 3.50 ratio?
3. The booster shouldn't cause sluggish performance. The loss of vaccum could make it idle rough, though.
Not sure on the Fords, but I haveseen throw out bearings before that came with zirc fittings, if it has been replaced then maybe this one will have one, if not just replace it.
