wondering where the numbers are on the 460 to identify what vehicle it came out of. emissions here in AK require you to put a 77 or newer in a 77 truck so i was wondering about getting a 460 block from anything and stamping it with a 77 id number, unless they go by the casting number, and if thats behind the starter like on my 351m then they wont take parts off to identify it. got any other tricky ideas let me know. what do you think they look for to see what it came out of?

Unless it has the ID tag on the intake or on the coil mounting bolt, the only way to get an idea of the year is the casting codes on the block. The alpha-numeric code will tell you when the design was first cast and what, if any changes were made to it. For example: D1VE-6015 was a 429/460 block first cast in 1971. D7TE-6015 or D8TE-6015 is a truck block first cast in their respective years, that, or newer, is the block you will need to get. D3VE-A2A heads will work, they were used through '79. They will have no problem identifying the heads, but they may or may not look at the block...I have no idea. Your best bet is to go and get an original 460 out of a late '70's, '80's truck. They are good motors, common, and will give you no problems when they check the year of it. Unless you go back to pre '72 motors, there is really no difference in the '70's-'80's carbed motors, other than connecting rods, not a big deal.

The bigest thing you need to worry about is the emissions crap for your year. If it looks like it has the proper crap most of the time they don't care. That however is a general rule not a given. Just something to consider.
