I think I have seen this mentioned before but I just got mine in. If I have the brake to the floor, truck stopped, I cant turn the steering wheel. I was told by the dealer this was normal, it was because the power steering and brakes use the same vacuum. But I was told by a mechanic this should not happen. I checked a neighbors Dodge 2500 and a Chevy 2500 and steering was no problem. Does any one else have a 2000 250 SD that can either confirm or deny this.
I have had the same thing happen a number of times. Letting off the brake seems to fix it. My dealer had no clue. I guess I've gotten used to it, because I haven't thought about it untill I read your question. Love the truck though.
I had my F250 SD V-10 4x4 for about a week. Today I was paralled parked on a hill. To my surprise when I started manuvering out of this tight spot, I applied my brakes and then tried to steer to the left. The steering was bound up and only loosened when I relieved brake pressure. The harder you press on the brake the tighter the steering wheel becomes. I took the truck straight to the dealer. The mechanics were baffled. They couldn't believe it was doing that. They went out to the lot and tried several other trucks 1999 and 2000s. All had this problem. They attempted to call Ford but Ford is closed today due to some kind of training. The mechanics thought that this was not normal. ALso agreed this is a potentially serious safety concern. What would happen if I had to hit my brakes hard at a high speed and then try to swerve to miss someone or something. Also I am concerned with problems occuring with plowing. I will not be satisfied with "this is normal". I love my truck, but for 33,000 I want to be able to turn my steering wheel with the brake on. If any one else owns a SD with this problem please complain to Ford and demand more than "this is normal" it is NOT.
I have a friend with the same problem. Got pretty pissed when he was taking his truck down a slope out in the field. When he slid off halfway into a drainage ditch, he had to apply the brakes firmly then attempted to steer in different directions to get some traction to back out. He didn't want to ease up on the brake because it was worse fate going down. He brought the truck back to the dealer and demanded it be fixed within 30 days or he'll pursue with the lemon law. Let ya'll know what happens. It's still at the dealer as far as I know.
My 2000 SD CC Lariat V-10 does the same thing, I agree this stinks and is a potentially dangerous situation. I voiced my concerns on an above post. I havent had mine to the dealer because I need it for work everyday. But with all the posts Im starting to see I am becoming increasingly worried. Sounds like it may be recall time.
