Hey Guys.
I have also been thinking of ways to get more air into the cleaner and have seen lots of posts of everyone's ideas of RAM AIR.
A functional scoop, IMO, would not only look cool but also be quite effective.
Remember, a diesel engine has a large suction draw as it is so I don't think that the vacum over the hood is going to be too much of a problem.
There is a product out there that diverts the hose of the air cleaner into a spot on the firewall and uses the wiper cowling for more air. This might be more of an area that would have poor airflow due to the vacum created by the window.
I have a bug deflector on my hood and this restricts the already restricted air flow even more, so ...
I thought, how cool would it be to add side cowlings along the front fenders? something like what is used by 10ton freightliner trucks.
What do you think?
Sorry BCHunter,
to add a photo, don't use the quick response comment area.
Go to Post Reply and you will se a tab (has a picture of a mountain)
that's your add an image tab.
wycowboy, your blower would have to be able to produce more than 850 CFM constantly. A 7.3 is using 850 CFM of air at 3300 RPM. I also considered that route driven off the engine belts. The Y pipe would be a downfall because the air the blower produced would vent out the wrond side of the Y unless you had some type of check valve. In the end after thinking this through several different ways I sprung for the turbo. The 15 pounds of max boost and 5 to 10 normal driving would be hard to duplicate any other way.
Well It was just a though I had, I still might play aroujd with it. there are some pretty good blowers out there if one looks around, running it off one of the belts is some thng I had not though of though,, J
bchunter, you need to set up your gallery, I set up a gallery that has pictures I post that are not normally visible to people that are veiwing my gallery.
When you set the gallery up you can then upload your pictures to FTE
Then you link to the picture you uploaded.
In your gallery there is a place that says "forum codes"
Under that is a code for full size image which is the link you paste into the link you want to insert the picture in.

you know, i never wrote it but i was thinking it. i grew up spending my weekends on my brother in law's truck yard. the truck that comes to mind is (i think) the ford semi with the round air intake on the side of the hood. not that it would look good on our trucks, but side cowlings would be awesome. would you have them face forward, backward, or just a strait shot out the side of the fender?
check out the vents on the west marine website. from the main page, select electrical and ventiltion on the left side. follow the (exterior)venilation links. there are 3 pages of marine vents. the stainless/chrome clam shell vents would look cool on the side of our fenders. the second page has a 13" louvered vent that would look neet also. the last page has the largest clam shell vents which have an opening of over 6 inches.
so, who's going to be the first to cut into their fenders?
I don't think that I am that brave. This is the nicest looking truck I've ever owned. I steped up 13 years when I bought it. I like you idea, though, and would for sure try it on someone elses rig
i snuck over to West Marine during lunch to check out the vents in person. the clamshells are just that, clamshells. the chrome vents have a flange that you can attach a hose inside the engine compartment. i agree with you bchunter, if your truck is really nice, leave it alone. my truck's paint is decent except for the hood. it needs the oxidation removed big time. if i ever get the "honey do" list done, i might tackle something like this.
Ive been toying with the idea of a scoop also, but different than yalls ideas.
I was going to cut a 6x8" hole in the corner closest to the passenger seat. Id fabricate an air box for a K&N conical air filter, and run it up to another fabbed box that protruded from the hood about 2" up. It would also be removable, so I could attach a snorkle to it for offroading.
And now that yall mentioned it, Im worried about it being in the air stream or not, what do yall think?
I remember seeing a product on the "Truck's" which was a hood that has a scoop built in tha flows into air chambers located under the hood that were sealed. You then would cut the hole in the chamber where ever you wanted the air to exit - in the middle if you want, on one side if that is where you want, ect. It looked like a great product with tons of uses. I am not sure where it was bought from, but they ususally use Jegs stuff on that show. I like the idea of customing your own intake, just like I said, I don't really want to cut up my rig. RawPower, if you can fabricate something up, I think you are on the right track. Good luck, and have fun.
You could have a Cowl hood-like protrusion that really wasnt part of the hood.
IE-have a hole in the hood for a cowl that stored the air filter, that was like a pan, and had a tube coming out the back of it that went to the turbo (did you say yours was turbo or NA?).
If you watch horsepower TV also, they had a few episodes where they worked on a Mustang and added a functional cowl hood (Project Nightmare I think). It'd be the same. This idea would be similat to the air intake on the 66 Vette, with the filter built into the hood, except its not part of the moving hood (so youd have a two piece hood).
bchunter, your intake is now basicly like my stock 86 intake. One thing to consider is water, if you ever ford deep streams bumper height is where you will be geting close to sucking water in your intake.
When the weather gets a little warmer I am going to figure something out. I have about three ideas that I am tossing around in my head.
A person almost needs to install a vacuum/pressure guage on the engine side of the air cleaner to figure out if what they do is an improvement or not.
well, after staring at my engine compartment for about 20 minutes, i guess i wont be cutting the hood or fender anytime soon. i forgot about my AC. it sure takes up alot of space. i'm going to start with the soup bowl and work my way up to cutting hoods and fenders. if i can ever save up to repaint the hood, i for sure will look into a hood scoop or something. i told my son that i wanted to add a ram air scoop on the fender and he said he wouldn't want to drive it cause it would look gaudy. geez, is that all it's going to take to keep him outta my truck
