'99 4.0l SOHC 4x4 with Volant cold air intake and 2" exhaust. 50% highway avg 65 mph, 45% major streets avg 40 mph, 5% secondary streets avg 25 mph-19.87 mpg. O/D always off except highway-foot usally slightly heavy but rarely so hard as to have it kick down 2 gears for acceleration. Very suprised at my average, much better than expected!
K&N FIPK
Borla Cat-back exhaust and high-flow cats.
Mobil 1 Full synthetic @ 10k intervals
i get about 20mpg city driving if i am light on the pedal, which isnt very often but when driving several full-throttle bursts on a trip i still manage to get 17mpg even with the A/C on. i did manage to get 24mph once but that must have been a false reading.
I was getting 14-15
I added KKM and Flomaster cat-back and now i get 16-17
thats mostly in town, some highway, and a small amount of off road
This tank though i've been reving and off roading alot. i went trough 3/4s of a tank with only 130 miles
i always rev the engine when it gets warmed up....just love to hear it roar. people behind me at stoplights must think im crazy. i am not driving as much now with premium at $2.00 a gallon since that what my superchip requires..
Using Castrol Synthetic for last 20k or so on a 130k motor. Getting about 20 MPG at 70 MPH, about 15 at 80 MPH, less in town. Tire pressure on Bridgestone Duler AT's was too low at 29 PSI. Raising this to 40 PSI (44 is max) increased my mileage by at least 1.5 per gallon. With a 21 gallon tank this really adds up. Going the speed limit and taking it easy on the take off helps. Combined city/highway was about 280 miles on a tank before filling, now over 300. Check your tire pressure with a good gauge.
'96 OHV V6, 4.10 LSD, K&N FIPK, Mobile 1 5W-30 ever since 34k miles (now has 112K). I get about 19 mpg on the highway and around 12 to 14 in the city. Average for both city/highway driving is around 16 mpg. I can go about 270 miles in 16 gallons of gas used. Not bad at all.

12-15 MPG, '94 Explorer XLT with brush guards, mixed city/highway miles, generally light foot on the gas. This truck has never really surpassed 15-16 mpg, even on the highway.
Tmborland, I'm no expert, but that 40 PSI you're running on your tires sounds pretty darn aggressive. I've heard of goosing up the pressure to 32-35, but not 40 PSI. Is it worth the deficit in ride and handling, not to mention safety concerns, for the extra 1.5 MPG?
I have a 2000 4.0 SOHC 4x4 I went to Aken SC and was running 24 mpg at 65 mph. On the way back I ran the same route but ran 70 mph and my mpg went down to 16 mpg. I running 38 psi in all my tires and the psi went up to 40 psi in the heat and I live in Fla. I watch the tire psi and heat all the time.
I've definately noticed that too. There is something about these SOHC engines --- they have an "effeciency sweet spot" between 40 and 65 or so.
Running over 70 makes for long periods make it crater. Actually, I think keeping it just below 70 is still okay....but much over that puts a "hole in your tank."
I've got about 130K on my 98 xlt 4.0 SOHC. I'm still getting about 20-21 with mixed city/hi-way driving - mostly from having a light foot.
I was up in the mountains last summer running the blue ridge doing camping and off roading at 45 - 50 mph, I was well over 400 miles on the tank. One thing I did was turn off the Overdrive when running the mountains to get rid of the gear hunting, and that was a big help gas wize.
