I have a 1999 350 SD, V10. When making a full turn to the left, there is a recurring clunking sound and pulling sensation in the front end. I recall someone else mentioning this problem but cannot find the posting. Has anyone else experienced this problem and determined what it is?
My 99 also did this. It was a stuck auto hub. You don't mention if you have the auto hubs, but I'll guess you might. The first time, the vacume line was damaged, so one hub stayed engaged. The second time water got in it. The third time they rebuilt both sides with an update kit and all was well. They fixed it finally, but it was a big pain in the butt. Reach in on the drivers side front wheel well and grab the front drive shaft from the transfer case. The exhaust pipe is very close, so watch out. The shaft should spin easy, by hand. If not, a hub is engaged. If it is stuck, get it fixed ASAP as other damage may result.
I,m wondering if there is an actual Ford update for the auto-hubs, my right one never wants to release after usig it, and anything about the exhaust restrictor on the diesels coming on when your driving. Does Ford have a site to inform people and if so what is it?
I just had my truck at the dealer today. WHen I make a full right turn or left turn, there was a thumping noise in the front end. After driving it more found it was in only the left hub. Yes I have auto hubs. Wish I didn't. Dealer is going to rip down the hub on Friday to see what's going on. Will probably have to replace it. I am a little concerned that this happened with under 1500 miles on the truck. I only had it in 4x4 once. No mud, no plowing, just easy driving. The tech at the dealer said it sounds like the hub is either engaged or trying to engage even though it should not be engaged with (auto and 2x2) selected. Sure wish I got the lock or free hubs. Let ya know what happens after Friday.
Yes my truck also has a bad hub. 2000 F250 4X4 V10 SD. Heard the popping noise when steering hard to left or right. Dealer is replacing the hub. ALso have a creaky, squeaking clunking noise in that same left front. Called the dealer he said it was a plastic bushing that needed to be replaced. Said Ford is having alot of trouble with them. Doesn't cause any damage, just very annoying. This bushing will be replaced along with the hub but dealer has advised me that that plastic bushing will go again, apparantly from dirt. Can hardly believe I'm having this trouble with only 1200 miles of easy, hard road driving.
