Well, since i started playing around in the truck, and driving it a bit. Ive noticed there is ALOT of play in the shift. Very hard to find the gears.Btw, truck is a 69 F100 4 on the floor. I6 240. Anywho, its still ok to drive the truck with the play in the shift, its just really a pain, you knwo searching the gears and all. So, how can i fix this? One friend said a new fly wheel. Others have said i can tighten up something to make shifting tighter. Any opinions guys? Thx.
I'm not to sure about which 4spd came behind a six, but I know that the T-18 and NP435 were offered in these trucks. Do you have a granny first?
If it's one of these, my experience has been that it's just the way they are.
You might be able to get a seal kit for the shift tower, but I'm not positive
Compared to my Turbo Coupe, the truck had a LOT of play.
Flywheel has nothing to to with it.
On top of the transmission where the shifter comes out there is a retainer cup that keeps the shifter in the transmission. if it comes loose the shifter can get VERY vague and loose. If it's a BW you tighten it to the left, if it's an NP you have to push down and twist the ring.
And if it's a top loader (very unlikely unless it was swapped) and it's not grinding gears, then the shifter itself is probably worn out. If it's a quality shifter like a Hurst, you can get rebuild kits.
