My 97 F-150 started doing something very weird today during a long trip...sometimes after a stop when I'd turn the ignition, all the gauges responded normally but absolutely nothing happened (no cranking and the engine didn't start). After several attempts with the same result, all of a sudden it worked perfectly. After the second stop, the problem was worse and took about 20 attempts to start the truck. The battery is about 3 months old and it doesn't seem to be the issue. I would think the starter motor wouldn't act this way even if it were about to go out on me. Any ideas before I take it in to the shop?
Hi and welcome to FTE.
check all the ground connetions first, then check positve connections, corrosion in batterty cables, if you don't find anything, then drop the starter and inspect,, next have the solnoid & starter tested, free at autozone, hope this helps.

Could be the starter, especially when it gets hot. Could also be the solenoid, but I would lean more toward the starter. Could also be the cables, check those out also. If you have an Autozone near you, take your truck to them. They will test your equipment for free and tell you if it's a starter, or what not. That way you will know what ou'll need. But don't take this that the battery is all right, but Autozone could tell you that also.
