Question Need help trouble shooting!!!!!

I have a 1998 4X4 3L Ranger.
I am having a clattering noise when I let off my accelerator while I am in 2wd, that does not occur when I am accelerating. The noise is behind the cab and underneath, not sure if it is at the differential or directly behind the cab. It sounds similar to an exhaust pipe that is rattling up against metal, but it is a heavier sound like solid metal and not a thin pipe. The noise does not occur when I am in 4wd low or high. Although, when I am in 4wd I noticed the driver side rear tire was locking up when I made a couple tight lefthand turns. I have checked the transmission fluid and it is OK. I checked the driver side rear brake and it was not locked or malfunctioning. I think it is either my rear end is going bad or transfer is going bad. Could it be my u joints? Does anyone know what is going on or other things I can do to help in narrowing down the problem?
