Hadn't changed a thing in my rear breaks. They were just a little bit worn, less meat on the shoes, so the wheel cylinder has to push the shoes further to apply pressure to the drum. By adjusting that out, it seemed to make all the difference.
I just had this exact problem you are describing on my 1991 F350. I bought the truck about 1 mo ago. Anyway on mine it was the master cylinder. Only thing it didn't fix the fade prob 100% so checked the back brakes. The adjuster was adjusted as far as she could go and the pads and drums were thin as could be. Evidently PO didn't want to do a rear brake job. Had to replace the pads, drums, cylindars, seals, and the bearings on one side. Also had to replace the ABS module, from what I understand the rear brakes will not work properly without this little electrical wonder. Turned out to be the most expensive part too at about $250. Anyway after just under $1000 I've got a truck that I'm not afraid to step hard on the brakes. They work wonderful! Good luck!
I re-adjusted my brakes to the point the drums start to warm up after 5 minutes of run time so I backed them off a little more, but still have the declining petal.
EricBoutin, on that abs module, is that the same thing as a ABS "dumpvalve"?
Did you get it at a parts store or a Ford dealership?
Also is there a way to check the booster canister to see if it has a leak or bleeding off someway?
I forgot to mention, mine is a '93 250 4x4 5 speed.
Thanks for the replys.
Will do gbeach, hopefully tomorrow I'll do a re-bleed on the brakes and if that doesn't do it I have a couple more shops to try out. 2 shops that I have talked to were not much help other than "replace the MC". I got much more info than that here by doing a search on "ABS module".I'll let ya know.
Well, we re-bled the wheels, front and back, a couple times each. Ran about a half gallon of brake fluid thru it. There is much improvement, but there is still a very slow amount of fad. Pretty sure we found the ABS module on the drivers side of the engine compartment, actually so far down you could argue whether it was in the compartment or slightly below it. We didn't do anything to it since my Chilton manual doesn't go into detail far enough for my level of ability. Will try to question a couple more shops tomorrow.
