Windshield chrome install

I installed my new windshield with a new gasket. It came with some sort of aftermarket plastic chrome stuff to use, which I don't care for. Has anyone tried to reinstall the original stainless trim using the aftermarket seal? Maybe using some sort of silicone to hold it in place?

I know that the original stainless trim has to go in the gasket before the windshield is installed. My understanding is that the new windshields aren't as thick as the old ones so a new gasket is needed to seal. Maybe that's why they give you different trim too?

The original seals with the stainless trim is different than that of the seals without trim. That stainless trim is probably thinner than the plastic, so what I am getting at is that it may not work to use the stainless in their seal with the plastic trim.

Is that plastic chrome stuff about 1/2 in wide and flexible? If so the gasket is for the 78-9 pickup and will work just fine in your 67-72. You need to get an lockstrip installation tool from your local parts store, shouldn't cost more than $10. There should be some corner pieces in the kit, also. Spray some soapy water in the groove and thread the lock strip into the groove. Then insert your corner pieces. The lockstrip is necessary to tighten up the gasket and seal the windshield. The lockstrip is available in black or chrome. The other poster is right about inserting the stainless trim, it must be installed into the gasket before the w/s is installed into the truck. I do a lot of windshield work and would rather work with the lockstrip than the stainless trim any day of the week. It looks better, too, until the sunlight turns it brown, but then it's rather inexpensive so you can change it whenever it does go brown.

So you are telling me that the lockstrip is more than cosmetic? It helps keep the seal tight? I have the lockstrip but no corner pieces, anyone know where they could be bought?

I guess I will be selling the trim on eBay as I can't use it.. Too bad, I loved how it looked!

The lockstrip is just that, a lockstrip, and it's crucial to the retention of the windshield, especially in case of an accident. The corner pieces are going to be tough to find. They'll probably have to come out of a salvage yard. Maybe some of our fellow FTE guys can help you out. They are either chrome or black. The black ones will are just painted, so if that's what you find, just clean off the paint and you're in business.
