has anyone else noticed that ever since ford dropped the old 300 six banger, that the competetion(namely chevy) has come out with inlie sixes and fives.just seems a little fishey to me,but they do say the best form of flattery is to copy someone or something.
Remember, Chevy introduced their in-line 6 in the late 1920's or early 1930's. Old Henry didn't like in-line 6's, so he went right to a V-8 in 1932. Ford did not introduce an in-line 6 until the early 1950's, if I'm not mistaken.
yeah but between the big three, ford was the only one to use a inline for a long period of time, the fiftys to the ninetys.all i saying is that when ford was using the inline gm was building v8's and v6's,now that ford is NOT using inlines gm is.kinda like when IH introduced its rotary combine in the late 70's,john deere said it wouldnt work, but twenty years later when the patent ran out guess who had a rotary combine ready for the market.
Actually, Chrysler had an in-line 6 from 1924 until sometime in the 1990's. The 1924-1960 sixes were flatheads, and from then on they were the mighty slant 6, but still in-line. If you count AMC, which Chrysler purchased, they still have an in-line 6 in production today, the 4.0 in the Jeep, which was derived from the earlier AMC 4.2 liter six.
I believe that Ford 300I6 was the best 6 cylinder motor ever put in a truck period. For longevity and power nothing beat it.
Amen to that. I've owned and driven lots of cars and trucks in my life. The first were 1930 models when I was a kid starting to drive in the 40's. When I retired, had a '97 lariat, great truck. But after retirement I wasn't using it much. Sold it and bought this cherry one owner '90, 4.9, short cab, short bed. Just a basic pick-up. My first Ford six, now I can understand always having heard that this was Ford's best engine.
GM is making some really nice inlines lately. The 4200 I6 would be a very nice base engine for the Sierra/Silverado trucks, it also produces more torque and much more HP than the 300 ever did, and at the same low RPM ranges as well. I agree however, they are new engines, and although GM had the 250 and 292 inlines, the 300 still gets my vote for durability and strength. It does not have the performance, emissions, or fuel efficiency of these OHC GM inlines however. This seems very much like a comparision of the modern V10 to the dated 460 motor. Perhaps if these GM inlines do end up in the Silverado/Sierra, and they catch on - Ford may bring back an improved version of the 300, or at least some sort of inline 6 cylinder.
