i have a 93 4.0L 2wd that i just turned 170k mi on. it still has the factory O2 sensor. is it time to change it? im getting about 16-20 mpg with driving mixed b/w city and highway. i drive like gramma in my van (my motorcycle is for goin fast) should i be getting better mileage?
any brand of o2 sensor in particular to use, or should i go factory.
I agree, I just changed the O-2 on my 87 Ranger 2.9 only because it was the orginal factory O-2 with 221k on it. It runs the same on the new one. Live and learn.
If you notice your mileage going way down for no apparent reason the sensor could be the problem as well. I have also heard when buying a new one to get an OEM part right from Ford. Sometimes the aftermarket ones are generic and don't run properly. FYI.
People who sell o2 sensors want you to replace them more often.
I don't replace them unless it is needed.
However, after saying that, I must admit that I once changed the O2 sensor just because I happend to have a new one and the van ran run MUCH better,
I have also had the same results by changing the engine coolant temp sensor.
In both cases the check engine light was not comming on but the van ran a lot better after changing them.
I only buy this kind of stuff from the dealer as the "oem" stuff sold at the local parts house is not as oem as they want you to think it is.
In the future I will only mess with the O-2 on my Fords if I get a code. Heres the first thing that I will try to clear the code. Interesting link. www.saabnet.com/tsn/faq/o2sensor.html
