My odometer readout has been going off and on lately. I have tried to narrow it down, but it is not associated with any miles/time interval. It does not appear to be caused by any bumps in the road. When it goes out I no longer try to miss potholes, now I aim for them to see if it will come back on again. Has anybody heard of this or experienced it? Any suggestions?

This is a known problem with the expeditions. A guy one here wrote up a how to on fixing the problem, but I can't remember where to find it. If you don't want to solder yourself, you will have to buy a new instrument cluster at 300 bucks each.
This problem was killing me right after I bought my '99 Expy! I checked with Ford and they told me the only way to fix it was to replace the cluster for $300! :-staun :-staun :-staun
I wanted to put in white faced flame gauges so I decided to check out the boards in the cluster and there it was....a cold solder joint!
Tim - what an awesome post. Thank you so much. I was going to buy a white faced plate also. So, I will put up with it until then, and then follow your post. How do you like the flames?
