My truck is a 99 ranger XLT 4 banger automatic longbed with about 85K. Those ofyou who read my posts here know i tow a deccent amount of time and i overload my truck regularly andi have a fairly high amont of mileage on it for its age (85K) the shocks make noise when i hit bumps or NYC craters. Based on that criteria what would you recommend i put on in the way of shock absorbers for fronts and rears, if you could id even like a part number, and if possible i dont wanna stiffen the ride to the point where it really bangs when i hit a hole. thanks in advance for your advice!
I just put on a set of KYB Gas-A-Just Shocks. I am very pleased. It rides a little more rough but my Ranger drives so much better. I would definitely get them again.
I put a set of Bilstiens on my 4x4 a few weeks ago, as I also overload my truck quite a bit. Yes, the ride is a little stiffer, but the truck handles much better. Less bouncing, less brake dive, less sway when cornering. Handled very well towing loaded 6x12 trailer too.
When I took off my old shocks, I could easily compress them with my hands, and some of them wouldn't even extend back on their own. I could bounce the truck with one hand. With the new shocks on, I can jump on the tailgate and the truck will barely move.
I have a 99 2x, lifted with 31's. I put Rancho RSX Reflex's on the front, and Rancho RS5000's on the rear. It rides pretty stiff, but there is absolutley no body roll when cornering. I tow a boat and there is no sag when I hook up the trailer or laod the bed of the truck down with allot of weight. Like I said, very stiff ride, but I love the way it takes corners now -
If you have the cash I don't think there is a better way to go than the Rancho RS9000's - I think they are seven or nice way adjustable. My friend has them on two difrent trucks, his are the older ones that were five way adjustable. Anyway, for the money they are awsome, you can really dial in the ride you want, or change it when you want, like you could set it softer for when you aren;t towing or hauling a load in the back, but when you do you can stiffen up the ride in a matter of seconds. The last time I checked they were about $250 for a set, but IMO they give you versatility that no other shock can match -
