What type of "4WD" do you have? I'm not that familiar with the newer Explorers, but on the V6's with the control trac 4WD t-case (can select Auto 4WD, 4WDhi, 4WDlo), I've heard of a "brown wire" mod that allows you to disable the control trac clutches and give you the equivalent of 2WDhi. Not sure if it applies to 2003's, though.
If you have AWD (no selector choices and no low range) I don't think there is a way to disable the control trac.

I do not know what it is called, but it has a setting where the front wheels get power when the rears spin, it happens really fast. It also has a full-time 4x4 setting, and low range. I hate that stupid A4wd!!! I wish I could just remove a fuse or something and then replace it when I am done driving it (my mom is angry that I disabled the seat belt chime...)

If you can't find anything here on it, go to www.ford-trucks.com and run a search for "brown wire mod" or something like that. I know it applies to 2nd generation Explorers, they might have some information on applying it to 3rd generation as well.
