I got my truck on monday and I've found some charming problems already. Its a 2001 Ranger Supercab XLT 3.0
When I flipped it into 4x4 HIGH no problems, it went into the four wheel drive and the 4x4 HIGH illuminated by the gauges. So I brought the truck to a stop, put it in Neautral, flipped it to 4x4 LOW and nothing happen, no noise, the 4x4 LOW didnt illuminate by the gauges.
I dont think I'm doing anything wrong, does anybody know what the problem could be?
Just wondered if you actually tried to drive it when you had it in 4x4 low. It could be that the light for 4x4 low could just be out..... But other than that, you said you had it in neutral, brakes on, and complete stop. That should have done the trick. I used to work as a Co-op Mechanical Engineer while i wa sin college at Borg-Warner - Muncie, IN, where most of Ford transfer cases are made. One thing that we would see pretty often, is that there would not be a complete gear mesh when switching into 4 low, since the truck is not in motion. kinda looks like this >< So try going back to 2wd, driving a few feet, and then try going into 4wd low again when you stop.
I have the same exact problem with my 2000 Ford Ranger 3.0 Supercab (24k miles). Curently its at Ford right now being fixed for the thump/clunk problem in the driveshaft so I will play with it more before I know there is something wrong with the 4x4 Low.
