Detonation?

Hi all,

I have a question concerning detonation. I realize that it is a lean condition, but how do I determine this? What are the signs/symptons of detonation? Any info for this dummy would be appreciated.

Detonation sounds like the sound of gravel being shaken inside a metal can. Kind of like a muffled, angry bees sound. It can be caused by a lean mixture, or incorrect timing. You might hear it under hard acceleration or under slight load, depending on what is casuing the detonation.

To me, it just sounds like 'pinging'. Another way to tell is to pull your spark plugs- if they are white, and not a tan color, you are running lean. I'd suggest checking for vacuum leaks, and hitting it with the timing light, like mramc1 said.

Thanks for the info guys,

I am not experiencing this problem. I have just read a lot about detonation on this site and was curious as to what exactly it was. What can happen if this condition does exist? What is happening inside the motor when detonation is occurring? Is the fuel igniting the too early causing the piston to want to go back down before reaching the top of its stroke? Any info greatly appreciated!

Detonation: Caused by A/F mix ignited by high temp or high cylinder pressure, as 2 flame fronts collide. In other words there is a second ignition source within the cylinder after the plug fires but before the fuel is fully burned, so you end up with 2 ignition sources, the 2 flame fronts collide and you get a heavy metallic sound. Preignition is very similar but is caused by a heavy carbon deposit or spot, happens before the plug fires and makes a ping sound. Hope this helps and hope you never have to hear it.

pinging

the sound of pinging is caused from the air/fuel mix igniting before the intake valve is fully seated, causing the valve to slap back into the head. Not good for yer valves or valve seats and can mess up yer valvetrain, especially for solid lifters.
