Chopping off exhaust

I was wondering what the downside would be to cutting off the exhaust pipe before the part that bends over the rear axle and having the exhaust just dump out somewhere underneath the middle of the bed. Reason for asking is because all of the hangers that are welded to the pipe have rusted off and the universal hangers I have installed do not work the greatest, and this exhaust bangs around and rattles like you would not believe. I've also never been a fan of the side exit single exhaust, so hiding it would be nice. Anyone done this? Draw backs? Thanks in advance.

A problem with cutting the exhaust off under the bed is that it might make more cab noise and exhaust fumes make come up throught the back window. But heck, if your not into the sound much, just cutter off, I wouldn't worry about it, the only thing is that you might want to make sure there is a clamp at the end so it dosent rattle.

if you are going to cut it, try to keep it as far away from the cabin as possible, and make sure you bend the end down towards the road a little. better the carbon goes down then all over your under-carriage... the hot exhaust gases will dry any lubricant or seal they touch.

Thanks for the responses. I have no back window, so that will not be an issue. Putting a turn down on the end wont be hard either. If it dumps before the rear axle (with a turn down) what could the hot exhaust possibly affect if it were still to come up on the undercarriage when driving? By the way, this is a 96 reg cab/short bed 4x4 with the 4.9L.
