newbee starter question

I have a 351 cleveland in my 69 mach 1 and i just bought a powermaster 9005 starter for it. the guy at summit said this is the one for the 351 cleveland so i bought it. i got it today and there is a problem. the top mount hole is threaded and it shouldn't be for my application. i looked at the box and it said it works on a 351 m, 400, 429, and 460. i know these are all related so my question is if i drill out the threaded hole on the starter will it work on my car? and if not do you guys know anyone who makes a race type starter that will fit? thanks a lot for the help.

Can you slip a smaller bolt thru the hole so you don't have to modify anything beyond repair?

If the started does not work and you have to return it they may not take it back if it is modified.

I can' quite picture it but doesn't one of the bolts thread into the starter and one into the block?

It sounds like the same starter on my '78. The bottom two bolts go through the starter, and thread into the bell housing. The top bolt comes from behind the bell housing thru a non-thread hole, then threads into the starter. At least thats how it is on my '78 with the C-6.

The 351C uses two starter bolts that thread into the bellhousing. The 351M/400, and 385 series engine has one into the bellhousing, and one from behind the bellhousing that threads into the starter.

Yes, you could drill it out. It might be difficult to return then, as previously mentioned. It might be better to exchange it for the correct one.
