I am puting a 1987 rear gas tank in my 1979. I have done this before but I forgot how I done it. The 87 sending unit has 4 wire hook ups and the 79 only has 2. I wired the hot wire to the wire to the sending unit and the ground to the one that looked like it was the ground ( it had a stud but no wires leading off it). when I moved my flot the gage read backwards. does anyone have any ideal what I am doing wrong?
GM tanks run the opposite way on the sender unit. Is the sender unit for a Ford and is it installed properly?
You can make a quick gage test. Have someone watch the fuel gage and remove the sender wire at the tank. The gage should go to empty. Momentarily ground the wire and the gage should go to full. Do not leave the wire grounded or the gage may burn up.
I am afraid I don't know if later year Ford tanks are different for sender units. Someone in the wiring forum or fuel system forum may know. There are probably posts there that already have the info.
I used jumpper wires to check the unit while it is out of the tank so I could see the gauge and work the unit. Did ford use gm tanks on late 80's gas tanks?
Your gas tank may have an electric fuel pump in it which would explain the extra wires. Better be sure you know what those wires are for by taking out the whole sending unit assembly. I know there is a cut off year for carburetors around 87 when they switched over to fuel injection. The electric fuel pumps were mounted on the sending unit assembly inside of the gas tanks.
