I have ran a search and haven't found anything that applies to this. My 2002 SD Crewcab 4x4 v10 with 6 speed just started having a terrible vibration when you downshift to slow down and when your almost to a complete stop at braking. I did a front brake job, with turning the rotors, inspected all front end components and u-joints and could find nothing needing repair. Went and had the tires balanced and still have the vibration. How much play should the carrier bearing have? Would bad shocks do this. Truck has 52000 miles on it. Thanks for any help.
Do you feel the vibration in the steering wheel or in the seat of your pants?
If you are not applying the brakes and are downshifting, then it begins to vibrate, it should not be brake-related. Check the carrier bearing, both the rubber housing and the shims - if you have shims. If no shims - check mounting bolts.
There should be only enough "play" in the carrier bearing to move under load and that against the rubber housing part only. There should be no cracks or tears in the rubber.
BTW - If it also vibrates during braking, just the same as downshifting, then check the play in your pinion/ring setup.
Side Note: Turning the OEM rotors is not always going to "fix" the grab/wobble feel.
I have checked the driveline and find nothing loose. I feel the vibration slightly when i decelerate but right as i'm coming to a stop I feel it throughout the whole truck. There is one street i drive on that is a concrete washboard and i feel the same vibration no matter how I'm driving. Has me puzzled. Thanks for the input.
