Lately it seems to be one problem after another, I get one fixed and another crops up. I was having trouble with engine serging at all rpms but now its progressed in to not being able to idle at all. So far I've checked the ignition, and thats OK, replaced the fuel filter about two months ago, looked for vacume leaks, cheked to make shure fuel was able to flow from tank to pump,it did, but now I'm stuck. I have a feeling its the fuel pump but no way of cheking, chiltons says to measure PSI is there another way of findig out if its the pump or should I check else where?
One more thing its got a new edl 600, and before this started about a day prior I got a fuel smell in the cab when I would get on it
Hard to say. I've had fuel pumps still pumping gas but the truck would be dead b/c it wasn't enough. It's pretty cheap to swap pumps; you might try that. Interesting about the gas smell when you get on it; have you checked for leaks?
Yeah, I changed the gas cap because the old ones gasket was cracking, then I tightened all the 1/4 inch bolts on the top of the tank, and fuel line, I'm not shure if that took care of the smell
Is there anything to watch for when changing fuel pumps, or is it pretty straight forward this is a new one for me?
I too had the gas smell inside my 70 F250. The fuel tank is behind the seat. I replaced the sender and installed the cork gasket as directed (Install dry no sealer) but still had the gas smell. I then removed the gasket and used a gasket sealer on only one side of the gasket and reinstalled. I waited until my tank was about empty before I filled it. I also replaced the filler hose (tank to cab) using new clamps. The end results: No more gas smell in the cab. For the surging, check for vacuum leaks at the intake manifold and carb base gaskets. The problem may be in the carb itself. Check the float level. Pull the hose off the carb and place it in a bottle or can and then crank the engine to see if the pump is working. You can also hook up the pump to a gauge and measure the pressure to see if its within specs. Hope this helps.
