[font size="1" color="#FF0000"]LAST EDITED ON 17-May-00 AT 07:33 PM (EST)[/font][p]Since diesel's are compression ignition rather than spark ignition and use a much less volatile fuel the burn characteristics are markedly different than gasoline engines. Essentially what happens is at around 3000 rpm the piston head actually starts to out run the flame front so no compression and thus the flame goes out. That is why when you see a big rig accelerating it is blowing so much soot which is unburned fuel. On the other hand at low rpms because the compression is 6 X's that of gasoline engines you get lots of torque at around 1200 to 2000 rpms depending on engine design. For most big rigs they are really considered screaming at 2000 rpms. In fact the Navistar 7.3 which is in the Ford Super Duty is governed around 2600 rpms in International truck applications.
