Where's the power?

Hey all, I just sold a '00 F-150 XLT Reg Cab 4.2l 5-spd and bought a '01 F-150 Supercrew 4x4 Lariat 5.4l.

I know this is a much heavier truck and all, but I'm surprised with the lack of pep it seems the engine has. It has 48K miles, and seems to have been treated well by the previous owner.

So far, it came with a new air filter, I replaced the fuel filter (which seemed to be pretty plugged) and am wondering what else I should try without getting into mods (for now).

I guess a new set of plugs would be in order? What other suggestions would you guys have?

Does it seem to run well? No missing or hesitating?

When I initially test drove it, didn't notice any problems. When I picked it up, a little missing/hesitating at low RPMs, kinda like water in the fuel or something. Went away that night and no problems since. On the test drive, it was very low on gas. When I picked it up, full tank. Not sure if that relates in any way, considering it hasn't acted funny with any more full tanks. Seems to be running a lile better all the time. Just doesn't seem to downshift as early in the throttle as I would like, making it feel a little sluggish.
