Is there a choice on a 91 7.3 IDI transmission. What is a C6? I am going to be converting from 2 to 4 wheel and someone(not very dependable) said he thought there was a stronger tranny than the E4OD. Any help would be appreciated.
Well, to be honest, I think an old Mustang C-4 is stronger than the E4OD. The C-6 is it's big brother. It's only a 3 speed, so no overdrive. They used them till around '89 in the diesels then changed over to the E4OD. They haven't been able to stay out of the tranny shops since.
I have a c-6 in my 87. I have had no problems with mine, and everyone says their bullet prof. However they dont lock up like the e4od and so you loose a lot of power at the back tires. I am told the 6.9 with a stick put out about 150 to the tires where as the c6 is only 85. For that reason I am getting ready to swap to a stick.
They will have to pry my cold dead muscle bound left leg off my clutch pedal and my wraped right hand fingers off my shifter **** to get my manual tranny out of my truck.
Those auto trannies are nice in a car, mine is a truck.
Rides like one, sounds like one, hauls like one, ya gotta shift gears like one. Smokes like one also, nice and black.
the 6.9 was put in the 3/4 ton and up trucks from 1983 to 1987. 7.3 replaced the 6.9 in 1988 and ran up until 1994 1/2. You could get 3 diesels that year 7.3 IDI(InDirect Injection) N/A, 7.3 IDI Turbo,7.3 DI(Direct Injection) turbo(PowerStroke Diesel) the biggest difference between the 6.9 and the 7.3 is the 6.9 just needs to bored .110 over to be a 7.3 .The 7.3 also has bigger head bolts ; 6.9 has 7/16" and the 7.3 has 1/2". In a couple weeks I put pictures of my engine bay in my gallery and It looks just like it did with the 7.3 besides for a couple little add ons(coolant filter, backwards cdr valve, etc.)
ya could laso put a zf five speed in. I replaced my c6 auto with a zf five speed. what a diffrence that made in fuel milage. zf has an over drive gear. is built very heavily and comes in 2 and 4 wheel drive versions. ya can convert a 2 wheel drive to four wheel drive and visa versa.
I should have known the redneckmaniac would have the solution! thanks for the info. would be great if anyone has ever done the 2 wheel E4OD to 4 wheel ZF trade out. Would love to hear from them! I have the Dana 60(Front) already and mounting brackets.
You need; Just for starters.
Tranny and T-case.
Front driveshaft.
Wiring for t-case.
Hole in floor for shifters.
Clutch pedal and assembly from manual donor truck.
Flywheel and maybe a new starter.
Clutch slave cylinder and lines.
Clutch starter safety switch/ If you want one.
Relocate the crossmember.
New rear driveshaft/shortened old one.
Would be easiest to find complete wrecked truck and get all the parts in one place.
I copied the list into a Word file for no so great memory reasons. Thank you for the list it is very helpful, I am going to start looking for Donor truck.
for the c6 swap to zf i reused my old tcase and front drive shaft just need peddal assmebly and flywheel the starter was the same. since yars is a 2wd ya will need a tcase and front dirve shaft tho. also reused my rear driveshaft. as far as holes in the floor there is a pannel that unscrews least in mine anyways its big rite were the shifters go. taking it out makes it really easy to work and once its out A cut a hole in it or B get one form yar donor truck that already has the hole in it. all holes are already marked on the fire wall for were yar master cylinder will go and swapping peddal assamblys is a bolt in deal just a pain in the but trying to wiggle it in and out of there but it can be done. Ya will also need a clutch.
forgot to mention that the zf trans wether 2 or 4 wheel drive uses the same crossmember and mounting point. i dont no if its the same as the e4od it was 1/2 an inch diffrent then the c6. why they coulkdnt make them the same is beyond me. would have made my life easier. alls i did is slide the crossmemeber back half an inch and drill new holes in the cross memeber to bolt to the frame using the old holes in the frame. not really hard to do just time consuming pain in the rear.
