Need help with engine code

I have a very bad misfire and the check engine light is on.

Can anyone tell me how I read the engine code and interpret the code?

In other vehicles, I recall turning the ignition on and off rapidly two or three times and reading the number of flashes between pauses on the check engine light. This code was then translated to a specific fault.

Do we have the same opportunity with my 99 Navigator 5.4 InTech motor?

Thank you!!!

Your truck, as well as most all vehicles produced since 1996, has the OBDII (On Board Diagnostic II) system. There are hundreds of codes as the PCM controls nearly everything to do with the vehicle.

Go here http://www.obdii.com/ for more details. Like SHO89 said, Autozone will read the codes for free or you can buy a relatively cheap scanner for around $150 and read them yourself.
