Transmission problems
I wanted to ask everybody on here if they've ever had tranny problems with their 7.3l PSD's?
If so what was the problem?
Is your truck 2wd or 4wd?
Did you tow heavy trailers?
Did you use OD when towing?
Did you service the tranny regularly?
How much did it cost to fix?
How many miles were on it?
And of course if you've never had a tranny problem I wanna know about that too.
Thanx, Dewey

Hey all,
I have one of those tranny horror storys for y'all. Back in Oct. 2005, I purchased a 2003 F350 Crew cab, long bed, 4x4, psd 7.3 Auto. I always tow with teh O/D off. It had a Edge Juice with attitude and in cab monitor, 6" lift and 37's. It had 54k miles. It is not my commuter. I have a Honda for that. I use it to make dump runs and haul stuff for my house. I tow a 6000-7000 lb toy hauler trailer maybe 12 times a year. At this point the truck had 56k. I loaded up the toy hauler on a Sat. morning in Feb. 2006, drove 100 miles to Sand Lake OHV in Oregon. I proceeded out onto the sand in 4 low, with the tires aired down to about 30psi. By sand I mean the hardpack for those of you who know where I'm talking about. I got just a little into the dry stuff, and started digging a little. I stopped to back up, and out gushed all my smoking hot tranny fluid from the main seal between engine and tranny. I got towed out, and sent on a flatbed to Tillamook Ford. $3250 for a Ford factory reman tranny installed with 3yr, 36k warrenty. I asked the service manager what I needed to do to avoid this hassle again, and was told "Let me put in a shift kit, get rid of the 37's for 35's, and I'll calibrate the speedo for them. Only using modes 1-2 on the edge would not be a problem". I immediately replaced the tires with 35's, and they did put in the shift kit. $5000 for the whole deal. July 07, driving down the road at 55, stop at a traffic light. Turn right, and the truck won't shift up out of first gear. At this point the truck had 64k. Sent it back to Tillamook for on a flatbed and guess what, another ford factory reman installed under warrenty. now has 68k, I pulled and sold the edge for 375$, and hope for no more problems. Really makes me nervous though. Anyone got any suggestions??
Thanks!

Bought my 2000 ext cab DRW 2wd in Sept of 05. It had 86K on it when I bought itand ran great. At the time I was pulling a 25' TT. After a few trips and about a year I started to notice what felt like it would take up drive line slack at a start from stop. I serviced the rear end thinking the posi was the problem. Not the problem. This past June I switched from the TT to a 12K lb 5th wheel. Pull it home from N.C. to PA. with no problem. Found the problem when I backed it UP the driveway. Ended up replacing the TC with a billet TC, new plates, center shaft support ( bearing failure was the slipping problem ) input shaft. Add what was called a HD 2 kit to inprove shifts. I now let up to shift from 1st to 2nd or were a neck brace. Cost was about $ 1,400.00 Have about 1500 mile and a couple of pulls on it and so far so good.

At 105k miles I'm on my 3rd tranny. 1st one Ford replaced at 43K I think it was. The 2nd one I burnt up hauling hay. Then I got a set of gauges, mainly for the tranny temp. I have really been surprised how often the tranny gets hot when I'm hauling and now I know when to back off to save it. Extra tranny cooler is next thing on my list.
