tach not working

My tach quit working so I bought a new tach sensor, installed it and it still will not work. I checked the 15 amp fuse under the dash and its good. The overdrive light will not work either. Its a 1991 7.3 non-turbo. To drive it I have to start from Low 2 it get going because as I understand the tranny is affected by the tach. Does anyone have any ideas.

could be the tach itself quit.acording to my ford service manual the sender sends its signals directly to the trans controller, then it gos to the tach, just start chasing wires or pull the dash apart and check for power at the dash connector.

Hey thede04: That sounds like you need a new tach sensor. Its about $45 at your local Ford dealer. Its located on the right side of the oil filler tube, its the big 1' nut with 2 wires coming out of it.
