well i got my ranger..... ran ok....... decided that im gonna put some new plugs in her since i have no idea when they were done last.... took them off and they were old.... just fried and old..... so i am going along great and then break 1, 2, 3, all four of the exhaust plug wires... so i get a new set of wires and put them on with the bosh platinum plugs (wires are motorcraft) now my truck is missfiring.....
so i pull 1 plug at a time and NO plug i pulled seemed to effect the wobble of the idle..... so i take one of the old plugs (remember the car ran ok before) and i put that old plug in every spot 1 at a time..... still nothing..... look at the wires and their location..... eveyone is right..... the firing order is right witht he plugs in the right spot... so i put that plug in every hole again.... 1 at a time..... STILL missing....... im very very car repair capable.... i FIX cars all the time.... restore cars even.... and this stupid thing is killing me for a SIMPLE procedure.....
I'm not sure which set of plugs is the primary, but it's possible you are checking the wrong set of plugs. It sounds like you have a 4 cyl engine. There are two banks of plugs, which I think you already know. But both sets aren't firing all the time. Changing around the plugs on the side that only fires under WOT and load won't affect the misfire. Just a thought...
ok i am confused..... yes it is a 4cyl.... and yes there are 2 banks.... you have "intake" and "exhaust" banks. so your telling me that they dont fire at the same time?
because when i am just idle'ing its just lumpy...... missing a descent ammount.... but when i rev it up its smooth's out. i can hold it around 3-4k rpm's and its like nothings wrong.
if thats true about the 2 different coils/ banks firing at different times (one bottom end, one top end) wich one is firing for the lower part of the rpm's? i can dig into that more.
When they do fire, they fire at the same time. But one of the banks only fires under heavy load and WOT situations. I wish I could tell you which bank always fires, but I don't have that info.
Did you replace /both/ banks of plugs? Or just the exhaust side? I would highly recommend you replace the intake side if you didn't. The other set of plugs will be in just as bad of shape as the ones you replaced. And those differences in the new and old can create an uneven flame front in your cylinder which can cause serious problems. Also, digging through my manuals I have come to the conclusion that the intake side is the primary. I could be all wrong, but the front coil pack goes to the intake side. Logic dictates that if it's in the front, it is the primary. But as I said, I could be all wrong.
ok i was reading some posts about the dual platinums bieng a must with the edis systems...... i just looked at the plugs that were in there and they were autolite 764 they were working fine but ALL of them were matching 764.... the new plugs i put in are BOSCH platinum 4205 and i put all of them in both banks of plugs....
well it looked like in the threads that people DONT like to put the bosch plugs in their cars and seem like they are sold on the autolite's.... BUT does this sound like an actual reason why my truck would be idleing soo freakin bad? or is it something deeper?
yeah i did ALL the plugs... but like my previous post... i put all the same plugs in.... the bosch 4205. but all the previous plugs were autolite 764's
I use Bosch Plat's 4205 and my 94 4Cyl 2.3 runs great. I know that when I switched from MotorCrafts to these Bosch I had to drive for a little while to allow the computer to readjust to these plugs. Since then they have been nothing but great!? Wish I had some real advice to offer
Those Bosch plugs SUCKED and caused me sooo much problems on such a stupid procedure...... sure enough..... its the bosch plugs...
i went this morning and took the plugs back and told them they sucked so they said... "maybe you had a cracked one.... here take another set and try them..." so i did..... i mean so what if it eats up another 30 minutes..... so i put the NEW set of bosch plugs on.... SAME THING... so i take them back and said "give me 8 of these" (the autolite 764's that were in there previously... no there not platinum) and i take the new autolite's and come back home and put them in.... 30 minutes later..... cross my fingers and SWEAR if it doesnt run im selling it and never buying a ford again (im a chevy guy..... even got the tattoo to prove it .... i know... how could you tattoo a bowtie on ya.... SHUT UP! )
crank it and it IDLES SOOOOOOO SMOOTH! shut the hood.... take it for a drive..... PERFECTION! that was a lot of work for a stupid lesson.... DONT BUY BOSCH at least that 4205 plug..... tried 2 sets and neither one worked...
ok... just thought i would share my problem/success with autolite
The last (And only) set of Bosch plugs I had leaked by the insulator (On every friggin' plug), and melted the boots on all my wires... Yeah, THAT'S performance for ya!
When I did my plugs I just went ahead and paid the $7.30 per plug for the Motorcraft ones. Expensive, yes. But they will last for at least another 80k miles.
