Black smoke???

Now that I've replaced my glow plugs, the truck seems to run fine, although it does still take a couple of tries before it starts. There is a small amount of whiteish smoke right at start-up which clears as soon as the engine is running. After that, it never seems to smoke at all, under any conditions. What is the big deal about getting black smoke on acceleration or up grades? It seems to me that an engine that is well-made, well set-up and in good tune shouldn't smoke at all. Besides my pickup, I've had several diesel-powered motorhomes, the current one running a Cat C-12, and I never noticed any of them smoking, accelerating, pulling grades or any other time. Maybe some of you guys can enlighten me as to why I should want my pickup to smoke. I'm not being funny here --- I've never worked on anything but gas engines and don't really know diesels --- I'd like to know the answer so I can get the most out of this truck.
Thanks,
Dave

Dave, the cat c12 is electronic controlled. dont even worry about it smoking. Your idi engine in the truck is probably running properly by not smoking. Smoke (black) is just unburnt fuel. Unburnt fuel is wasting money. Perhaps a light haze is all you want anyway. Like smokey bear says, if there is smoke there is fire. Hope this helps a bit. Take pride in your ride and keep it clean.

Thanks for the post, bilder. I was beginning to think, after reading a lot of posts on this site, that my truck wasn't running right because it wasn't producing that black smoke under acceleration or load. I thought that maybe I should be thinking about adjusting the injection pump or something.
Thanks,
Dave
