I am looking at purchasing a new 2001 F250 SD but I am on the "fence" about whether or not to get the V10 or the PSD.
Does anyone have information regarding the pros and cons for both of these engines? I know the biggest difference is the price - I will be ready in Jan '01 for either one.
Also, I have read that the availability for these trucks has been questioned - high demand, low supply. Will that be changed in 2001?
Alot of the choice is personal preference. Smell, noise etc.. Some folks love it, others can't stand it..
If your planning on doing alot of miles of heavy towing, it appears the PSD is better choice.. It will have better mpg while towing, and in theory should last longer than a gas engine.
The diesel is slightly more to maintain (15 quarts of oil/change, fuel filters, etc..)
The V10 towing capacity is listed the same as the PSD, (in fact slightly higher because the engine itself weighs less), and $3500 less initial cost.. However the mpg on the V10 is in the 13s in mixed/city driving, topping out at around 16mpg highway.. (Those are the best numbers I've seen someone post, most folks post slightly lower).
No matter what you choose, both are great engines..
Enjoy your truck
The Kentucky truck plant has reduced production of slow selling Excursion and will build more Superduty Trucks. Expect the wait to be anywhere from 6 weeks to 6 months.
Hi Guy. i drive a 2000 f250 4x4 SD. Super cab short bed PSD, auto with 6600 miles on it and i don't notice any smell. i only get 13.5 mpg. that's city/hwy without the trailer. this is my first ford ok so i should tell you that i have been driving chevy trucks for 30 years. mostly 4x4s and they see off road use a lot. not hard muddy sandy etc, just rocky and steep hills and work stuff. i have had good luck with my chevys that i run hard and put away wet. becides towing my 6300 pound camp trailer with the ford, i like my chevys better. it rides smoother, it hooks up better, the a/c works better. i bent up the steering stabilizer first time off the road. it is the lowest thing on the truck. in front of the axle where a small 8" dia rock hiding in the grass took it out with ease. you can't turn right after that so you crawl under it in the weeds and remove it so you can get home. chevy will have a new truck out with a new engine in 2001. wait a while (sept.) and test them both, wish i had.
