I recently read an article about the 2001 3/4 and 1 ton Chevys and they claim more horse and torque than the current Ford SuperDuty. The Chevy gas engine is supposedly 325 horse and the Isuzu turbo diesel is 300 horse. I am big time Ford and I wonder if Ford has anything to compete with these numbers. The current V10 is only 275 horse and the PowerStroke is only 235 horse. My friend does have a Cummins in a 1 ton and a CAT in a 3/4 ton. Both Ford trucks and both motors fit great AND have incredible power.
The current V10 is rated at 300hp and 425tq not 275hp. For more info on the Chebby, look at www.pickuptruck.com I read a note that Ford will up the power in 2001 to 360hp and 460 tq. DOn't know if it is true
I wouldn't even worry about it guys. Look at the tow ratings for the 7.3L PSD, it's rated for 26,000lbs GCVW, where the chevy is rated for 22,000lbs GCVW. Shows you right there that Ford still has a higher rating. Plus, there is controversy over the new 6.6L from chevy, because it is the first diesel to be built with aluminum heads, and a cast-iron block. For gas engines that is fine, but for diesels (which run hotter) it can be trouble. The aluminum will expand faster then the cast-iron, and cause the heads to crack. I was talking with a GM engineer (who drives a F-450, with the PSD), and he said he wouldn't want to own the new 6.6L for at least the first 2 years of production. And remember, Ford has always come through for us, and they won't give up now!
To be fair, that PSD tow rating is for an F-450, the rating in F-250/350 for GCWR is 20,000. However the power for 2001 automatic PSD is 250/505 and for 6 speed manual is 275/520. That is pretty close to the numbers presented for Duramax 6600 of 300/520.
The biggest advantage I see initially for the GM is the Allison 1000 5 speed auto, which has been around over a year in other trucks. We will see how well it is mated to the Duramax, calibration can make a big difference!

Unless you are looking at the V-8s, in which chevy has the largest therefore most powerful, ford has a v-10, less displacement than the chevy's v-8 but more powerful, and a kick *** diesel. No comparsion.
Tow ratings (Gross Cargo Weight Rating-GCWR) are affected by the engine horse power and torque curves, and the transmission and the front and rear axle ratio and capacity, the tire capacity, the brake capacity, the springs, the frame, the handling characteristics and the cooling systems. They reflect how much weight the entire package can safely handle including the trailer.
Another thing that can limit the total trailer weight, is tongue weight: due to its adding load to the rear axle, with the norm of 10-15% for a tag long (bumper pull) trailer and the norm of up to 25% for a fifth wheel/gooseneck trailer. Equalizing hitches and tow vehicle wheelbase, and hitch position in relation to the rear axle (how far ahead of or behind the axle) can also impact the front and rear axle loading due to a trailer.
It is assumed that on trailers over 3,000 pounds, the trailers are also equipped with their own braking system.
Engine max. horsepower is only one component of a complicated system.
P.S. You are correct, sir! The Ford 7.3 liter Power Stroke Diesel IS an impressive trailer towing, cargo moving mobile powerplant, especially due to high torque at low RPM.

GM has historically had higher #s.
Reason? EMISSIONS-CAFE STANDARDS.
Ford is making lower emission engines with their #s. GM has a broader range of autos to hide their gas guzzlers behind. CAFE calls for avg across the product lines.
GM will have to comply with the LEV emissions standards someday. When that day comes...the #s will drop.
Ford is WAY AHEAD of GM on emissions compliance issues.
