I have an 89 F250 460 FI, and I'm hoping someone can help me diagnose a fuel system problem with my front tank.
Whenever I switch to the front tank, the motor dies in about 10 seconds. Also, when I turn the key to the ON position, I can hear the pump run for a few seconds, then it shuts off. I guess this is correct, but this rules out a bad fuel pump, right? The few seconds that the pump runs provides enough fuel to start the motor for a few seconds, but then it dies. Since the rear tank works fine, does this mean that the inertia switch isn't thrown?
If you hear the pump(s) run, then the inertia switch isn't tripped. I'm not sure if an '89 still has 3 fuel pumps or not. If so, then the in-tank pump could be bad and it's just running out of fuel. If there is a fuel pump on the frame rail (in the fuel line) you can unplug it, and then listen for the in-tank pumps to kick on with the key. Try it on both tank positions on the switch to test both tanks.
You need to determine if your truck has two fuel pumps or three. My guess is two, going from what you describe. It sounds like the fuel pump in the front tank is dying.
Ford fuel pumps don't suddenly die. They die a slow, gradual death. Just because you can hear them run doesn't mean they work.
Had the same problem with my 89 F350 with the 460, has 2 fuel pumps. Replace the pump I gurantee its crap, mine would turn on and sound like it was fine just like you had described. Guess what its not good, just replace it and you shouldnt have a problem, famous last words.
