After 196,000 miles, the transmision on my 94 f-250 no longer wants to go into gear without a real good revving of the motor.and occasionally will slip out of gear when moving. seems to shift good otherwise and fluid level is good. Is there something simple to this or is it re-build time? Please help, If my chevy friends see it sit in the driveway very long without moving, they'll know something is up!
High miles plus increased slipping starts to say rebuild time. The revving means that it's not building enough hydraulic pressure to activate the clutch pack(s) or that the internal seals on the clutch drums have hardened. This will allow enough leakage to need additional revving (increase pump speed) to overcome the pressure loss.
Could also be worn pump gears, a leak in the valve body, plus a few other things. The thing is that if you try to fix just one thing, you wind up putting more stress on old parts and seals, so it's more cost effective to just rebuild it.
If you decide to do that, don't forget to flush the cooler lines, check (or replace) the flexplate, and install a new converter. All intended to let you get the most out of the rebuild. Depending on how handy you are, you can get a Haynes rebuild manual along with a rebuild video, and rebuild it yourself. It's not rocket science, and the tech book/video walk you through the whole thing.
