i need step by step instructions on how to replace the shocks on my '03 f250. does the suspensioin have to be free of any weight? would i have to put jacks on the frame to allow the suspension to hang freely? do i really need to take off the front tires to change the front shocks? anything i should be aware of? i have been informed many times that the bilsteins are boot down, is that all four? thanks for the help.
the shocks are an easy install just unbolt and replace no jacks or need to remove the tires i just turned the wheels all the way to each side for more room. my rancho's went boot up. takes about 5 min per side.
There was a post by DCSpecial in another thread saying to install Bilstein shocks with the boots down and the shocks are pressurized! (will extend all by themselves)
BigDawg, I am the one that DC Special was talking to about the Bilstein shocks being pressurized--yes they do extend by themselves. All you need to do is crawl under the truck and take off the old shock and install the top first and then have the bolt ready for the bottom, cut the strap that is around the shock (keeping it compressed) it should be pretty close to lining up with the bottom hole already. As the shock extends out shove the bolt through and your done. The shock extends out fairly fast but all you have to do is be ready for it. You will need a 18 mm socket for the bolts and some WD 40 sprayed on them first will help to get them loosened up.
I missed getting one of the bolts in the back shocks as is extended out so be careful--you can miss the fronts and still use some muscle and get them up but in the back the shocks extend out to almost the ground and I had to get a small floor jack to compress it back up to try again since that is the only way to get leverage on it. Hope this helps!
