? about timing rattle
I have an 98 explorer 4.0 sohc, was wonding does the rattle occur all the time or does it do it on occasion. Mine has about 74000 miles on cold start up i have never heard any type of noise other than normal, since i have read about the timing chain problem, ive got where i start it up with door open. It does make noise, kinda sounds like a rattling noise when stopped in traffic, every time it does this, i can never get out of the vechile to really hear where it coming from, but anyway it dont do it all the time, sounds to me like it may be comming from under the truck.

recently dealed with the same issue with my 96 4x4 xlt expl, just changed the idle pulley bearing and put a new belt in (the bearing weas toasted), now all i hear is the moaning of the power steering pump. hope this helps.
