Might sound stupid but I had a salesman tell me that ford might replace them under warranty. (the truck is an 03 and only has 30,000 kms)I cant believe it but if they do I will take them.
Do you think they will?
they might, i know they won't do brakes. The shocks on the Fx4 are just repainted motorcraft shocks, nothing special though. See if they would give you the value difference in shocks if you purchased some rancho's or blistins.
un arent the shocks, ranchos? they dont look like ford shocks from what ive seen on trucks in the lot, they look like an aftermarket rancho shock. and why do you worry about rust, the salt dystroys them, i put new shocks on my truck and at the end of the winter there rusted, it dosent hurt them, but if your dealer will replace them vor a "visual blemish" i would have them replaced.
I wouldn't say they are painted Motorcraft. They would be Ford spec Rancho. You know we will by 20000 from you if you make them 10 dollars, we don't care if you make them light duty.
thats probly like the deal ford had with holley way back when, like for instance in my truck, motorcraft carb. its says so, but its actually a holley, so i guess its possible to have imitation ranchos.
One '04 SD FX4 I see every day started rusting the stock "Rancho" shocks at less then 14,000 miles and it's garaged! I think ford messed up one these, Rancho should be ashaimed!
well if there that bad, its only ranchos name thats getting hurt, and the wallets of the people buying the fx4 package, i dont think i would get the rancho shocks if there rusting that quick, if they dont care enough to make them last, there quality must be the same, like they could care less.
All the shocks for the F-250, 350, and up come from one place. A monroe shocks plant in Cozad, Nebraska. As well as every Rancho shock made. Rancho is owned by Monroe, and there's no such thing as a "Motorcraft" shock. That just means that its a component bought from a supplier that meets their specifications. I work as a product engineer at the plant that makes these shocks and they are all built from the same components. But don't assume that aftermarket Ranchos are better than the ones coming on the Ford trucks from the plant, cause they're not. Fact of the matter is, besides the rust (which I'm sad to say is just the fact that it shows through the white better that it does the black) the shocks that come on an OE truck are held to much tighter specifications than those sold as aftermarket. Lets face it, who's tougher to please? A ford plant and new customer, or someone thats got 100K miles on an old pickup that's shocks have been trash for 50K? The latter is going to be much easier to please.
You might go look at the black OE shocks on a Superduty sometime...there's probably rust there to, but does it show much?
(Believe it or not, Ford actually allows there to be rust at weld areas)
So quit thinking there's some big difference. You pay for the FX4 package cause Ford paid Monroe a lot of money not just to re-paint the shocks (we already make rancho's there wasn't that much cost there) but to specifically "re-valve" those shocks for offroad applications. You wouldn't believe the time and energy spent by teams of engineers working out of trailers at Ford proving grounds tuning shocks for every different combination of engine, wheelbase, drivetrain, etc. Every one gets a different part number (unless we get lucky and the same valve code works on more than one)
MonroeENGR, If Monroe makes these shocks under the Rancho name, why in the world would they be stamped Motorcraft on the side??I have the pictures in my gallery to show the stamp. It really doesn't make any sense to me. The shock in the pictures has only 1800 miles on it, and is all rusty. In my opinion the quallity is just not there. I'm not saying Monroe doesn't make good shocks I just didn't like the ones that came on my truck.
