I have a 98 xlt v6 automatic ranger. The front seems to slant down pretty bad, I've heard about torsion bars. Are they worth tighening? I also heard that they wear out the ball joints faster when you tighten them, is this true? Or should I go for a leveling kit?
Is it a 4x4 or 4x2? If you have a 4x4, you can tighten the torsion bars. I wouldn't see it ruining the balljoints (because a LOT of people do it too), unless you cranked them too high and the balljoints entended too far. Think about how many people buy leveling kits that are just spacers or longer coils, it does the same thing. I would think that the shocks would limit travel before the balljoints would have a problem. If it's a 4x2, you have coil springs in the front. You can probably buy longer coils, or a coil spacers. Either one will require an alignment, and probably a Cam adjustment.
Lots of people have. I raised one side that was sagging, and went to have it aligned but they found that the lower balljoint was bad. When they replaced the balljoint, they aligned it and loosened the torsion bar back to where it should be. When I fix the springs in the rear, I'm going to crank my torsion bars about 1 1/2". If you go to the forums on offroadrangers.com you will find a lot of posts from people who have done it. Just make sure you get it aligned afterwards. And be forewarned that you will probably have to pay extra for cam (lost the word), but anyway it allows them to adjust the camber.
