Head/Emmision?

Hope this is the correct forum. I have an 86 f-150 with the 351w high output(four barrel carb.) I have had a valve cover leak for awhile and have put off fixing it because it is on the passenger side with all the hoses for the emission components. Well the other day i started hearing a squeak/grinding noise from the front of the engine. Turns out the smog pump is going bad. This is my chance I thought, I will pull all the smog crud off the truck and fix my leaky valve cover. That is when I realized I am not as proficient on ford trucks as I thougt I was. Because on the back of the heads is a pipe that runs into a valve looking deal and into the smog pump. My question is, if I pull the emission stuff and plug that pipe on the back of the heads will it cause me problems. I am not worried about legal as we don't have testing and this is not a daily driver, it is a farm truck. I am worried about driveability and reliabilty. Thanks for any help you can offer.

You can remove the air injection piping from the back of the heads. You will hear the exhaust leak if the air injection bores are not completely clogged with carbon. If the heads leak exhaust, you can install pipe plugs to plug 'em up. You will also want to cap off the air injection tube between the cats.
