My 99 expy 5.4 4x4, drifts quit a bit on the road to the left. I have had several alignments, including a $300 from ford which included the alignment bolts. I still have the original shocks on (72K now) but this problem has existed for at least 2.5 years. I am going to purchase some new bilsteins within a few weeks, and rotate my revo's as well, but I am tired of paying a $100 a crack to align my rig. tires are wearing fine, just drifting.
It is quite the experience on the freeway with my wife nagging, the two kids screaming, and trying to keep my eyes on the road every second correcting for drift.
I recently had the truck in the dealer for an oil change and had them check the sway bar links, and for $50 bucks on top of the oil change (rip off) they said every thing looked good.
Thanks for any help guys,
jason
Oh buy the way, if any of you have that fading radio display, that shareamemory fix really worked.
Im having same problem. Had the truck aligned, tires balanced and rotated except my theory is that it could be my tires. In your case the (tires I will be ultimately putting on) will be the ones you DO have on your Expy Im not sure. Im taking my truck in tomorrow to check all the sway bars ect to make sure it isn't something like that before I spend the money on new tires. Mine is squirly..doesn't really have a prominent pull left or right but my steering is VERY loose and it makes it hard to control over the speeds of 60 mph.
Ok, this may sound like a stupid question but here it is..... HAVE YOU CHECKED YOUR FRONT TIRE PRESSURE? If you haven't, you need to open your drivers door and look at the little sticker there that says recomended tire pressure. It will tell you that the front tires need to be at 30 PSI and the rears at 35 PSI. This sounds a little weird, but this small pressure difference will stop your Expy from wandering! Do a search on this site for wandering or drifting and you will find the same answer. Hope this helps. Oh by the way.... you will need to change the pressures in the tires after every tire rotation also.
Let's assume that the front end is in perfect condition, which at 72K is iffy. How about the back end? Any worn/missing bushings on the links that locate the rear axle? What about the links themselves? Arrow-straight? If not, the rear axle may not be tracking straight down the road.
New shocks, alignment, rear sway bar, loose universal joint between the steering wheel shaft and the steering box, front tire pressure from 35 to 30 PSI. All helped mine but the tire pressure changed it from dangerous to a lamb...
Check your tire pressure. Then, make sure they centered the wheel when they did the alignment. If the "toe" in the back is off, it can cause the truck to crab leg. Take it to tires plus, or any other shop that will do a free aligment check and have one done. That way you can see if ford actually did a good job on the alignment.
