Woke up early this morning and pulled the headlights switch as I was on my way out of the driveway. About 15 seconds later the headlights started flickering intermittently. Interior lights flicker coincidentally with the headlights, but I don't see the interuption on my voltmeter reading, nor do I see it in the engine electric by way of power stumble. While the flickering is occurring, I can hear a relay clicking sound coming from the headlight switch. I changed it this afternoon just in case, but not my luck to have such an easy fix. It happens when the truck is not running same as it does when it is running. I just went out and pulled the lights on. It takes about 10 seconds for them to start flickering.
Does anyone have any 'helpful' suggestions that may lead me to a reasonably direct fix for this particular problem? If so, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks, Arlian
The headlite swich has an automatic circuit breaker built in
there is a bad connection somewhere in your system
check the connectors on the switch and the dimmer switch first
these are the usual bad spots
also check your ground cotact
I e-mailed you a wiring diagram link...see if it is in the wiring...looks like the wire to the beam headlight selection switch, and to the interior lights are right next to eachother coming out of the selection switch in the cab ..ill let you look at it..but could be a bad ground? I dont know much i just look at what i have, and try to figure it out..hope this diagram helps some....sorry for the lack of further info...

I started looking for shorts in the dash, suspecting that a short in the dash lighting (since the parking light detent was tripping the breaker also). When I moved some of the wires around inspecting them to no avail, and then tried the switch, the problem was gone. Obviously, the short was in my dash wiring somewhere and my inspecting the wires temporarily alleviated the problem. I guess it'll be tricky the next time it rears its head. But, at least I'll have a place to start looking. Thanks to those who replied. Regards, Arlian
My '73 acted the same - a headlight switch didn't help it either. I found the rear wiring rubbing the frame and shorting out. The taillight harness goes through a crossmember just infront of the rear bumper - it was shorting there. I repaired the wires and covered them with some rubber hose and all has been well for a few years.
